8vo.; original brown cloth elaborately blocked in black and gilt to spine and both boards, all edges gilt; [vi], [3]-126 + 16, publisher’s catalogue; with frontispiece and 3 additional fine full-page woodblock plates in colours; externally fine, internally very fresh with small triangular endpaper repair to front pastedown and a neat inscription to the same: “James Henry Brown, given to him by his teacher on her marriage day, Mrs. Brockerick, Cheadle Hulme, May 11th 1876”; scarce.

Very early edition of a volume of children’s stories involving a chimney sweep, first published in 1864. Here with the full complement of 4 colour plates which were reduced to three in later editions. No copies in any edition on the commercial market at the time of cataloguing. Only a handful of copies recorded in institutions worldwide.
