Original green finely ribbed blind-stamped cloth, spine elaborately and prettily gilt, neat gilt pictorial vignette to upper board; with engraved frontispiece and 3 other engraved plates by Otto Speckter; book with slight lean; externally clean with minor rubbing to extremities; internally sound with browning and diffuse foxing to lower margins, occasional marking, one dark brown spot to fore-edge of book block, which slightly intrudes, and 2 neat contemporary inscriptions to endpapers, dated 1848.
First U.S. edition translated by Charles Boner, published in the U.K. the previous year by Chapman and Hall. The book contains ten fairy tales by Andersen including “The Snow Queen” and “The Red Shoes”, which both appear here for the first time in the U.S. “The Snow Queen” provides the source material for Disney’s “Frozen”.
