Original red cloth elaborately blocked in gilt to spine and upper board, top edges gilt; pp. [xi], [ii] + 314 + [ii]; with 16 fine coloured plates by Maurice and Edward Detmold; externally bright with some light rubbing, a touch of fading, and mild creasing to joints, with bruising to spine ends, but no splitting, internally generally clean if a little shaken, although firm, with the occasional thumb mark or fox-spot and a contemporary and neat ink inscription to the front free endpaper.

First edition illustrated by the Detmold twins, Edward Julius and Charles Maurice.  This edition is among the finest illustrated interpretations of this important Victorian classic.
