Original mid-blue cloth lettered and decorated in gilt to spine, blind-stamped vignette to upper cover, top edges gilt, others uncut, illustrated front pastedown; pp. [vii] + 177; with pictorial title-page, frontispiece in colour with original tissue, and 11 excellent full-page black-and-white plates; a very fresh copy indeed, both internally and externally clean and bright.

First thus, the abridged Temple Classics Edition for Young People. Originally published in its entirety in 1856. This copy with a tipped-in signature of Charles Kingsley to the half-title and with, carefully affixed to a front blank, an original photographic carte-de-visite of the author (slightly faded), sometime mounted on cream card with red-ruled border and with Kingsley’s name below in a copperplate hand.

The author retells the ancient Greek myths for the young, includes the stories of Perseus; The Argonauts, and Theseus.
