Jack Vettriano (1951-2025) was a largely self-taught Scottish artist who was catapulted to world-wide recognition and commercial success on the back of his 1992 painting The Singing Butler. His style is narrative and cinematic in quality, often with dark or unsettling undertones, and has been compared with that of Edward Hopper. Pulp fiction book covers of the 1950s were a source of inspiration for his work.
