£400.00

8vo. (123 x 172mm); original pictorial card wrappers in colours over burgundy card, sewn; pp. [16]; with elaborate pictorial title in line, 7 coloured illustrations including one double-page spread and 4 full-page together with black and white drawings; a fine copy; scarce.

First edition, first issue, in the second issue pictorial wrapper on variant stock of this early title in the artist’s output. It has become a cornerstone work and is highly sought-after, first published in a limited edition of just 1,000 copies. The first issue can be distinguished by the absence of the publishing details beneath the Fairy Press logo on page 2 and by the burgundy under-wraps. The second printing appeared in white card wrappers with staples.  Signed in ink by van Sandwyk to the second page.

A delightful introduction in verse to the secret faerie world of elves, talking mice and woodland spirits: “The glowing slice of crescent moon is like a silver shaving. It’s often hung about on threads by fairies misbehaving”.
