Large 8vo.; original red cloth lettered gilt to spine with triple-line gilt panel to upper cover, with onlaid plate by van Sandwyk featuring the White Rabbit surrounded by a sinuous and intricate thistle and flower border in black and gilt, pictorial endpapers in cream and green, housed in the original decorated green slipcase; pp. [xiv], [3]-148 + [i]; with pretty pictorial title-page in colours, frontispiece, text decorations in line, and a profusion of illustrations throughout by van Sandwyk, largely in colour, appearing as double, and full-page, plates, vignettes, or “scraps”, together with smaller illustrations, pictorial initials and line illustrations; a fine copy in a similarly fine slipcase.

Van Sandwyk’s first treatment of Carroll’s perennial classic appeared in a large quarto format as a limited edition, issued by the Folio Society in 2015. For this trade edition the artist has coloured the title-page, the chapter-opening initials, and 5 additional illustrations (including one-double page), and provided new pictorial endpapers and a fresh coloured illustration on page 83.
